Maria da Graça Carvalho participated in the Final Conference of the Global Sectoral Approaches - "Proof-of-Concept" Study that took place in The Centre for European Policy studies in Brussels.
This closing event of the Global Sectoral Approaches "proof-of-concept" study tried to elaborate on the current level of understanding of the concept, in the framework of the UN negotiations, and assess how sectoral approaches can contribute to addressing the climate change challenge and help to level the competitive playing field. Sectoral approaches, meaning mitigation actions and programs at a sectoral rather than just project level, could potentially contribute importantly to implementing some of the provisions of the Copenhagen Accord and achieving long-term climate change mitigation objectives.
The conference was also an opportunity to consider how to build on the study results and encourage both industry and governments to take further steps toward the development and implementation of sectoral approaches.
The Sectoral Approaches "Proof-of-Concept" Study has been undertaken by the Centre for Clean Air Policy-Europe and its partners, the Centre for European Policy Studies, the Zentrum fur Europaische Wirtshaftsforschung Gmbh, Climate Change Capital Ltd., and the Institut du Developpement Durable et des Relations Internationales. The study was supported by a grant from the European Commission, represented by the Enterprise and Industry Directorate General.
