The United Kingdom (UK) and my country, Portugal, have the oldest uninterrupted diplomatic alliance in the world, dating back to a treaty signed in 1373. That fact alone is enough for me to say that any solution to the Brexit situation has to be one that preserves and treasures the historical bonds between Britain and the rest of Europe.
My personal preference - and I am not yet convinced that it is an impossible one - is a solution that keeps the UK where it belongs, amongst this family of nations that is the European Union.
The UK is an irreplaceable partner to other European countries in many fields, from science and technology to cultural, political and military cooperation. That bond must never be broken, even if others are.
