Water scarcity, droughts, soil degradation are all consequences of a changing climate that is becoming more and more uncontrollable. The Portuguese Presidency will put the renewal for the strategy for adaptation to climate change as a key priority for the next semester. We made several progresses addressing the reduction of water availability but there is the strong need of more robust measures to minimise the impacts of these phenomena. This resolution will serve as the EP position ahead of the expected adoption by the Commission of a new strategy on adaptation. I voted in favour of it also because I believe that we need a comprehensive approach to the problem of water in Europe. This wide and complex topic needs to be addressed within the research and innovation community, trying to coordinate the efforts that are done by the different institutions and stakeholders. In my work as rapporteur for the European Institute of Technology I am proposing to create a new European partnership (KIC) dedicated to Water, in all its dimensions. We need to step up our capabilities to cope with the effects of climate change and we need to mainstream adaptation in all relevant EU policies.
