Maria da Graça Carvalho defended on Wednesday in Strasbourg that more Science, Innovation and Research is the only route to “combine the ambition of fighting against climate change with strong industrial leadership in Europe, while preserving our way of life”.
In her plenary speech in Strasbourg, Graça Carvalho underlined that “the need to fight against climate change is not a matter of political debate” but an evidence that compels us to act, and acknowledged that Science will have a leading role in this battle. “We will have to act with ambition, but also with responsibility. Without making empty promises and focused on what we can achieve”, she stated.
She added that, for this reason, it is important to promote “the implementation of policies and measures already agreed and the use of clean technologies already available, many of which have not yet been applied”. But “we must also have the ambition to go further, adopting additional measures”, based on a “solid impact assessment”.
