Maria da Graça Carvalho defended this Monday, in the IMCO - Internal Market and Consumer Protection committee, the importance of creating a “clear legal framework” for the development of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in the European Union, considering it should be guided by the principle of "Artificial Intelligence for Humanity, centered on people and for people".
Maria da Graça Carvalho is the shadow rapporteur, in charge of issuing an opinion on behalf of the European People's Party (PPE), for a report on this topic whose rapporteur is Alexandra Geese (The Green). In her speech, she praised the work of the German MEP, but also revealed that she would propose some amendments aimed at reinforcing the ethical and humanist component of the report.
Namely, in relation to the defense of “European values”, the “surveillance” of the implementation of these technologies and the “empowerment of citizens with training and skills” that would allow them to benefit more from these technologies and, at the same time, protect themselves from any possible threats.
For Maria da Graça Carvalho, there is no doubt that, when correctly implemented, these technologies have the potential to bring very important added value to Europe.
