Subject: The exclusion of trainees in EU institutions from Erasmus grants
The Erasmus+ programme, which aims to support education, training and youth by providing funding opportunities for trainees abroad, excludes trainees in the European Union’s institutions, bodies and agencies. However, outside the EU institutions and in eligible countries, trainees receive Erasmus grants, regardless of whether their traineeships are paid or curricular. This measure is especially important today due to the crisis created by the pandemic, and the problems it has generated for youth employment.
However, it discriminates against trainees in EU institutions, bodies and agencies, and is therefore enabling and supporting a cycle of privilege. In the case of the unpaid trainees within EU institutions, bodies and agencies, the issue is even more problematic. Only those from the middle and upper classes can participate in these traineeships, which reinforces the cycle of privilege.
1. Why are students in traineeships in European Union institutions, bodies and agencies excluded from Erasmus grants?
2. Has the Commission tried to change this rule?
