Maria da Graça Carvalho was invited by the Bavarian State Ministers for federal and European Affairs and for Sciences, Research and the Arts Emilia Müller and Dr. Wolfgang Heubisch; and by the chair of the League of European Research Universities -LERU, Prof. Dr. Bernd Huber, to the Panel discussion - "Frontier Research for Innovation".

Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, made a keynote address. The discussion aimed to examine the impact of frontier research, which is mainly achieved by universities and research institutions, in the context of the joint strategic realignment of European research funding from 2014 onwards. On this occasion, it was discussed the best way to improve knowledge transfer from universities to practical applications.

The event took place at the Representation of the Free State of Bavaria to the EU and more than 200 people in the area of the research, innovation, and universities attended.
