In the quality of rapporteur for the Specific Programme implementing Horizon 2020, Maria da Graça Carvalho participated as a speaker in the debate hosted by MEP Professor Ioannis A. Tsoukalas (EPP), and Pan European Biological and Medical Sciences Research Infrastructures: Enabling world-class biological and medical sciences (BMS) research in Europe: Horizon 2020 and the pan-European research infrastructures, that took place in the European Parliament.

The Horizon 2020, currently under discussion in the EP, will define the scope and the direction of research in Europe in the next decade. This discussiontook place in a difficult economic context for many EU countries.

A fundamental element of the Horizon 2020 are pan-European research infrastrucutures as an engine to promote world-class research. They will be key in enabling Europe to establish a European Research Area based on Excellence that can give a response to EU Societal Challenges.
