The Just Transition Fund is to support regions heavily dependent on coal and similar energy-intensive industries to move to more sustainable forms of energy supply. I voted in favour of this important mechanism because we need to support also financially the territories that need this fundamental change, that in many cases takes many years. It is particularly important that the Parliament decided to increase the budget that was proposed by the Commission, to increase the co-financing rate to up to 85% of the costs for the eligible projects across the EU and to make voluntary the transfer of resources from other cohesion funds. The JTF will become a key component of the EU’s cohesion policy and it will help the transition to more sustainable forms of energy for all Member States, reducing the negative impacts that these changes might have in the short period on jobs, economic development and well-being.
