At the European Parliament, Maria da Graça Carvalho hosted the dinner debate on The great transformation: decarbonising Europe´s energy and transport systems, a Breughel publication.
Ms Carvalho congratulated the authors and welcomed the report during her intervention. Ms Carvalho also stressed the necessity for Europe to decarbonise itas energy an transport, because this "will enable us to deal with environmental issues - such as climate change and air quality - but it will also enable us to improve the security of energy supply and to increase our competitiveness".
The Bruegel report 'The great transformation: decarbonising Europe's energy and transport systems' underlines that further public support and new innovative policies are needed to bring low-carbon technologies such as fuel cells electric vehicles to the market and to compete with incumbent technologies. The report, highlights that public support mechanisms are imperative because otherwise the private sector alone will not have sufficient incentive to invest in the process of transition towards a sustainable economy.
