In an opinion article in Observador, MEP Maria da Graça Carvalho wrote about genetically modified organisms. “Regarding the GMOs, the European Union has been an example to the rest of the world in how it has created and implemented a legal framework that protects its populations and their natural resources from possible abuses committed in the name of science”, Ms Carvalho said. The author believes that this ethic must be maintained, “even if it sometimes means competing in unequal conditions, particularly in the agricultural sector, with more liberal markets.” Ms Carvalho believes that Europe must also be prepared to revise its legislation when there is evidence from scientific research showing that it makes sense to make such a change.
