MEPs believe it is “fair” for the UK to return to the European Union budget the funding it receives for programmes such as Horizon 2020 after Brexit, O Jornal Económico online reports. MEP Maria da Graça Carvalho explains that in the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy there has been debate on the possibility of countries that have "third country" status in the bidding process for support under Horizon 2020 "paying in full", except developing countries (which is not the case in the UK). The Portuguese MEP considers it fair "because it is receiving much more than funding. It is receiving access to knowledge, extended platforms of researchers". As a third country, the UK will have to ensure that some requirements are met.
