With USB-C input, the universal charger will be a reality by 2024 in the European Union (EU). Member states must transpose the directive approving the adoption of a standard charger for electronic devices by the end of the year. The precise aim is to reduce the number of existing cables and allow different devices to be charged with the same charger, reducing the environmental footprint and consumer costs. Social Democrat MEP Maria da Graça Carvalho says the way forward should be "a society without cables."
