In an interview with Vida Económica, MEP Graça Carvalho talked about the challenges the transition to a green economy poses to the European industrial sector. MEP Carvalho, who was recently elected president of the European Parliament’s Industry Intergroup, says that she will work to increase the sustainability of the financial and industrial sectors in Europe. To maintain the industry’s competitiveness in face of ambitious environmental goals in the European Green Deal, MEP Carvalho says that is crucial to assure “access to support and financing, the simplification of procedures, and the respect for the industries and regions’ specificities.” Moreover, MEP Carvalho underlines the importance of investment in research, innovation, and digitalization of industry. The MEP says that the European Green Deal will be a great challenge to many member states, praising Portugal for its ambitious and well-structured plan for energy and climate. MEP Carvalho also talked about the Horizon Europe programme, highlighting its importance to achieve the goals in the European Green Deal through the digitalization and modernization of the economy and “the recovery of industrial and technological leadership in the world.”
