In a debate in RTP3, several Portuguese MEPs discussed gender equality, especially in European politics. S&D MEP Maria Manuel Leitão stated that gender equality is a very important topic, and that it is relevant to point out that 40% of the MEPs in the Parliament are female. The MEP also pointed out that there are several disparities depending on what subject the focus is on, for example, the gender equality committee is composed by 7 men and 55 women, so gender equality must be fought by all, not just women. EPP MEP Graça Carvalho spoke about the need of quotas in the private sector, like there is already in politics, so that women are more present at the top of companies. GUE/NGL MEP José Gusmão stated that the imposition of quotas in European politics was a resounding success, and that women must have access to more opportunities since there is no quantifiable reason that determines that men are fitter to occupy more powerful positions.
