Maria da Graça Carvalho participated today in the debate of the session "Enabling Electricity", organized in the European Parliament by EU40 and Enel Group.
The event took place in the framework of the International Year of Sustainable Energy for all (2012). The objective of the debate was to discuss the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative and to introduce the project "Enabling Electricity".
The speakers were the EU Development Commissioner, Mr. Andris Piebalgs, Vice-President of the European Parliament MEP Alexander Alvaro; Senior Vice-President of Enel Mr. Paolo Iammatteo; and UNIDO Representation Office to the EU.Mr. Florian Peter Iwinjak, The moderator was EU40 MEP Ms Radvilė Morkūnaitė, Member of the ENVI Committee.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, in his keynote address to the World Future Energy Summit, last January 2012, called on Governments, the private sector and civil society to make significant commitments to action in support of his Sustainable Energy for All Initiative.
EU Development Commissioner, Mr. Andris Piebalgs, during the Rio+20 conference, last June, pointed out that the EU is fully behind the Sustainable energy for all initiative. According to the Commissioner, all actors, be they public or private, international or local, have a role to play.
The Enel Group decided to respond UN Secretary-General and Commissioner calls for Action and committed to create "EN-EL Enabling Electricity" programme to increase access to energy. Electricity is an extraordinary driver of growth and prosperity and today, more than one million people across the world are benefiting from Enel's innovative projects to access energy.
